Jean H. Voorhees, 90, of Liverpool, NY, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2023 of natural causes. She is survived by four sons: Kevin (Debbie) of Baldwinsville, NY, Brian (Iva) of Yardley, PA, David (Cathy) of Liverpool, NY and Allyn of Fillmore, CA; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; her sister Ramona (Ken) of Martin, TN; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Jean was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband Earl, on January 30, 2021.
Jean grew up on the north side of Syracuse and then in Caughdenoy, NY where, upon the premature death of her father, she got a job pumping gas to help her family make ends meet while also pitching in to help her mother with the caretaking of her three younger siblings. Fast forward a few years to the best blind date ever, and Jean was on her way to bringing up four sons during her 67 year marriage to Earl.
While working as a stay at home mom, Jean generously devoted time and energy volunteering at Van Duyn Nursing Home, delivering meals for the North Area Meals on Wheels (NAMOW) in North Syracuse, and participating in church activities. In 2006, NAMOW surprised Jean by honoring her with an award for her decades of outstanding volunteer service.
Jean and Earl traveled widely, especially during their 20+ years of retirement, in the U.S. and abroad. She was also a long-time season ticket holder and fan of Syracuse University football, basketball and lacrosse and particularly enjoyed going with Earl to Big East basketball tournaments in New York City.
Jean regularly attended church, at the Dewitt Community Church in recent years and Andrews Memorial Methodist Church prior to that.
Funeral services will be private. Jean will be laid to rest in Greenlawn cemetery in Warners, NY alongside Earl. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jean’s memory to the North Area Meals on Wheels (NAMOW.org) of North Syracuse, NY or to the charity of your choice.
