Obituary

John Arnold Cortese (JC) January 20, 2023 John Cortese passed away peacefully with his daughter by his side in Syracuse, on Jan. 20. JC was born Oct. 15, 1938 in New York, NY to Maida Arnold and Charles Cortese. His life took shape in NYC, in the city that is the inspiration for so many. As a teen he worked on Wall Street running for brokers. He moved to iron work later in life, served with the Army National Guard, and had a lengthy career in Sales Management. His favorite position was representing Sea Ray Boats in Florida and Thousand Islands, NY. John's passion was music, and honing his skills made him a lifetime student. He advanced his music career by aiding and developing others. He formed several trios and larger groups who played throughout New York State, New England and Florida. John retired in Florida and lived there for 30 years, prior to returning to Manlius, NY in 2021. The most common words people use to describe JC are welcoming, immediately comforting, a gentleman, amazing talent, kind, my friend, he led by example, quick wit, a treasure, considerate, soulful, and that he made you feel like a better person. John Cortese inspired change through the way he made you feel, while giving back to his community and through the gift of his music. Simply put, he played who he was. JC is predeceased by his brother, Daniel Cortese. He is survived by daughter Robin Cortese; family members Norma Cortese Styers (Earl Styers), and Carolyn Ainslie; best friend; Debbie Schuerer; and cousins Tamaralee Shutt (Brian Modafferi), Michele Arnold, Richard & Joanne Shutt, David & Sharon Shutt, Lori & Jim Prell, John Paul Arnold and many more. A celebration of John's life will be held Feb. 20, 5-8:30 p.m. at Vito's Ristorante, East Syracuse, N.Y., all are welcome. Donations can be made to JC's favorite charities, David's Refuge, www.DavidsRefuge.org and Maureen's Hope, www.MaureensHope.org.
