Julia Ball Obituary

Julia "Julie" (Shuler) Ball October 21, 2019 Julie Ball, 95, passed away on Oct. 21, 2019, at the Syracuse Home Health Care Center in Baldwinsville, where she resided for the past 7 years. She was born Julia Shuler on Jan.30,1924 to parents John and Minnie Ward Shuler, at the home farm near Mecklenberg, NY. There was a blizzard the day Julie was born, which delayed the doctor's arrival and necessitated the doctor staying overnight at the farm, a story that Julie and her sister Margaret were fond of telling. After graduation from high school, she received her RN from Auburn Memorial Hospital, then served in the US Army as a nurse during World War II, until her discharge in January 1946. During this time, she was introduced to her best friend's cousin, Ernie Ball, who she married on Dec. 19, 1945. Ernie and his mother drove from Syracuse NY to Santa Fe NM for the wedding, as Ernie had been discharged from the Navy, but Julie was still stationed at the Army's Bruns Hospital in Santa Fe. After Julie's discharge, Ernie and Julie settled in in Syracuse NY, and had 3 children, Don, Kathy and Phyllis. The family moved to Baldwinsville in 1958. At this time, Ernie and Julie joined the Baldwinsville First United Methodist Church, and became respected and contributing lifelong members. Julie used her RN training to provide private duty nursing and volunteered at blood pressure clinics and bloodmobiles. She was also a source of support for family and friends with medical issues and questions. She was a devoted stay-at-home mother and wife for her family, and also was considered a second mother to many younger people in her life, who valued her for her caring and acceptance. Loved ones who passed away before Julie include her husband, her parents, her sisters Margaret Wyckoff, Katherine Galarneau, Ruth Hineman, and brother John Shuler. Survivors include Julie's son Don Ball of State College PA, daughter Kathy Chappell of Baldwinsville, daughter and son-in-law Phyllis and Bob Turner of Santa Fe NM, niece Marge Galarneau of North Syracuse NY, niece Charlotte Wyckoff Hollis of El Paso, TX, niece Colleen Schuler of Ithaca NY, niece Janice Shuler Oshiro of Kapaa, HI and friends from the Baldwinsville Methodist Church. Special thanks go to her later life family, the staff of Syracuse Home, who provided her with exceptional care and support in the last years of her life. Services will be held at the Baldwinsville Methodist Church, 17 West Genesee St, on Friday Nov.8, 2019 at 11 am. A graveside service will follow, and then a reception will be held in the dining room of the Methodist Church. In honor of the care and support provided by the Syracuse Home, and instead of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to McHarrie Life Foundation, 7740 Meigs Rd, Baldwinsville NY, 13027, Attn: Kelly Acomb. Envelopes for such donations will be available at the church service. Julie was loved by many and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.
